What are the different methods of management development?

The goal of management development is to stimulate leadership development for managers by management development programs. These management development programs include lectures, seminars, conferences, job rotation, coaching and many more for leadership development for managers. These management development programs can be divided into two categories:

1.    On-The-Job Methods

2.    Off-The-Job Methods

On-The-Job Methods:

a)    Coaching: This method involves assigning duties of a guide to a manager for their employees to follow. The goals of the program are established, and the manager encourages the employees to reach the goals and guides them along the way for leadership development.

Management Development Programb)    Job Rotation: This method provides an ample opportunity to broaden the potential horizons of
managers. It involves a rotation of executives from one job to another job, from one project to another for educational and learning purposes on a planned basis.

c)    Understudy: The understudy method prepares an executive to assume the responsibilities of the manager or superior once they step down from their role.

Off -The-Job Methods:

a)    Case Studies: This method involves learning through the experience of others. Customized cases are lined out and studied for leadership development of managers.

b)    Role-Playing: Role playing methods induce readiness for any new possibility that a manager may have to face during professional life. It also helps in understanding Human Relations complexities.

c)    Conference: Conferences help in reaching a large audience at a single time. Many managers come together at a single conference and share their views followed by a group discussion.
